Evolution has shaped organisms to make use of the natural light dark cycle. Their behaviour is synchronized to the most suitable time of day or time of year. For birds, light is the main cue to time their activity. Artificial light at night alters the natural photoperiod and because of this the reliability of light as a cue can be questioned.
We expect artificial light at night to have an effect on birds’ timing of breeding, daily activity patterns, abundance and survival. We use two approaches to study birds withing LichtOpNatuur, for more info see tabs ‘Deepening research’ and ‘Monitoring’.
