Monitoring

Bird monitoring at our sites is being done by two organisations; SOVON and Vogeltrekstation (see tab ngo’s for more information). They use two different methods in order to obtain as much information as possible about the abundance of bird species. SOVON makes inventarisations of the territories of breeding birds by noting down for example song posts and nest locations. This results in a map with territories of all observed species. Volunteers of Vogeltrekstation are catching birds using a standardized protocol. Mist nets are placed on each transect, this is being done several times during the breeding season. Birds that have been caught receive an aluminium ring with a unique ring number. This way they can be identified next time they will be caught. The goal of catching birds with mist nets is to be able to get some insights in population dynamics on our sites. It could be that, through the illumination, a certain species increases or decreases in number.
