What are the effects of nocturnal light on the breeding success and survival of birds? Has light with a different ‘color’ (different spectra) a different effect?

This study will be done with the great tit as a model species. This species breeds in nest boxes in many areas around Wageningen. The project includes measurement of song activity, laying date, clutch size, number of hatchlings, recruitment and paternity.

Like in the monitoring project, these parameters will be tested with nocturnal light with different color compostion: greenish light, reddish light, conventional street light and all will be compared with a group not exposed to any form of artificial light. The results of this in-depth project will be integrated with the results from the monitoring project.
